Mission Advancement

We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, and we are bold in sharing the many stories of how God’s grace and work in the world are changing lives and communities. We are equally bold in seeking the support and participation of people -- young and old alike -- in drawing together our resources to enable ministries and efforts that serve and love our neighbor in Jesus Christ’s name throughout the world.

Mission Advancement shares the ELCA's message of God's love with a broad and diverse audience across all media, and directs efforts for support of the ELCA’s work through major gifts, appeals and planned giving. Its work communicates consistently the distinctive identity and mission of the ELCA, empowers people to share the story of God’s redeeming love in the world, and encourages members to engage in and financially support the work of this church both in and beyond their congregations.

The five teams and functions of Mission Advancement are:
  • Constituent Support
Responds to inquiries for information, resources and assistance.
  • ELCA Foundation
Sustains, grows and strengthens ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, congregations, agencies and institutions through personal gift planning, financial education and investment management services.
  • The Lutheran magazine
Nurtures awareness of Christ's presence in our lives and the world, shares stories of God's people living their faith, connects us with the global Christian community, provides an open forum for discussion and challenges us to bring God's grace and care to all.
  • Marketing Communications
  • Provides marketing, public relations and digital media in order to communicate stories of faith in action, ELCA news, open forums, and opportunities for participating in the mission of the ELCA.
    • Direct mail appeals, newsletters and mailings
    • Web
    • Video
    • Social Media
    • Publications
  • Mission Funding
Encourages and develops support for God's mission and ministry through congregations, synods and churchwide ministries.
The diverse work of Mission Advancement reflects the sentiment of Martin Luther when he said, "Our faith is a living, busy, active, mighty thing."

The Campaign for the ELCA

The Campaign for the ELCA leads the ELCA in its first-ever comprehensive campaign, Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA. The campaign will invest in the future of this church, deepen relationships and expand ministry opportunities that serve our neighbors and communities in the United States and around the world.
